Banksia Secondary College witnessed a corroboree last week.Aboriginal troupe, the Mayi Wumba dancers shared dance, songs and stories from the Gu Gu Yalanji people of far North Queensland with the students.
The dancers, who live in Kuranda outside Cairns, were in Melbourne for Moomba and visited Banksia Secondary College for the special performance.
During the hour-long performance in the school's gym, students learned about traditional fire-making and heard stories of hunting and gathering.
The college's curriculum co-ordinator Maurice Oldis said about 400 students were joined by guests from other schools as well as the relatives of eight aboriginal students at the school.
"The students were confronted by Aboriginal culture, which was very authentic and very powerful," Mr Oldis said.
Tribal leader Lance Riley explained each dance and the students were invited to learn them after the performance.
