FLIGHT FROM SOMALIA

by Ali Mumin

When the war started in Somalia, my family and I were there. My mum said everyone had to stay inside the house. She locked the doors and windows. We slept on the floor, because if you stood up you may get shot or when you go outside.

In a few hours, the guns quietened down and my mum sent me to the shops to buy some food. Instead of going to buy some food, I went to a friends house. I stayed there. In a few hours the gun shots started and they started going to the houses and shooting the people.

I ran away with my friend and a couple of people. We started walking, but there are enemies in the forest and lions. There is one guy who knows everywhere and he shows us where to go. A day later we were tired, hungry, thirsty and we can't walk, then we saw some good guys who lived in the country. They had camels and goats. They gave us some milk from the goats and they told us where to go. Finally we came to a road house and we sat there in case a car came.

A few hours later, we saw a truck coming and one of us stood on the road to stop the truck, the rest of us hid under the trees, but the truck driver thought we were the enemies. We told the truck driver what had happened to us. The truck driver took us in to a refugee camp, but we didn't know anybody, so he took us to people that he knew. We stayed there for a day and I left and my friend left too. A few days later, I found my family and they asked me what had happened. I told them, but my friend had nowhere to go. He found his uncle in the refugee camp, I told my friend goodbye.

I stayed in the camp, but I didn't like it because there was not enough food, drink and education. There were also other problems in the refugee camp that made me scared and frightened. It was Friday and I came from Mosque, when I heard a noise coming out of my house. I thought something was wrong, so I rushed to toward my house, when I discovered the news that we were accepted to go to Australia. Finally, I had hope and a bright future, because I could continue my education in Australia, because of that I was happy and excited.
