A "Banksia" is an attractive native shrub or tree, with thick, often serrated, leaves and large erect cones of stiff, wiry flowers in shades of greenish-white, yellow, orange and red.

The plant is named after Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist who accompanied Captain James Cook on his three year expedition to the Pacific which culminated in his claiming British sovereignty over Australia in 1770.
