VET courses allow students to gain additional work-related skills within the VCE framework. Successfully completed VET courses give students credits for Units 1-4 of the VCE.
As of 2000, some courses at Units 3 &4 give ENTER scores which are important for admission to many teriary courses.
In 2000, Banksia Secondary College has students studying VET courses in Hospitality, Engineering, Automotive and Horse Studies.
There is a wide selection of VET courses available - 27 in total. Varied options include Clothing Design and Production, and Small Business Practice.
Costs are currently subsidised by federal and state education bodies. In most cases these courses are one full day per week off-site, usually on a TAFE campus.
The College has appointed Mr. David Brant as Careers Pathways teacher to help students sort their way through this complex maze.
The concept behind the Careers Pathways Program is not just to place and offer courses, but to help and guide students through the seemingly endless opportunities that confront them, especially in their senior years of schooling, as to what they can or should attempt at the end of secondary school.
For some students it may be "What university course should I do?", or on an ever-increasing level, "What TAFE course can I do?". Whilst these aspirations are a goal that all should aspire to, there are students who see their future in a Traineeship and/or Apprenticeship or full-time employment.
Whether a student's pathway is university, TAFE, apprenticeship training or straight into the workforce, Banksia Secondary College will provide assistance with appropriate decision-making.
You may be a Year 7 student reading this or a parent of a Year 10 student, the message should be the same ....... that there are pathways by which you, your daughter or your son can plan for the future with a growing confidence that Banksia Secondary College has a program in place that will help students in their decisions post-Year 12.
Whilst we have emphasised the senior aspect of this program, we would like to take this opportunity for all students and parents of Banksia Secondary College to take advantage of this program and contact us on 9497 3822 to ask or seek advice or maybe make an appointment to meet with us to discuss future pathways for your son or daughter.
