Banksia Secondary College

ESL Excursion

A group of ESL (English as a Second Language) students in Years 7, 8 and 9 recently visited the Healesville Sanctuary, Australia's most prestigious showcase for native animals. Situated about 60 km from the Melbourne CBD, it is only an hour's drive from Banksia.

We drove in the school bus through Eltham and climbed the War Memorial tower at Kangaroo Ground which has spectacular panoramic views of the city and surrounds. This is the view looking south-east towards the Dandenong Ranges.

Once at the 32 ha reserve, we visited the Education Centre for some hands-on experience with a ring-tailed possum. This is an adult female, and the boys were able to see her pouch where usually two young will grow for some time after birth, and then shelter until they are large enough to ride on Mum's back.

After some initial terror, the girls were prevailed upon to handle a Children's Python, so named because it was first identified by Mr. Children! Naturally it is non-venemous, and almost fully grown at one metre.

Shirwac was one of many tourists to make the acquaintance of this very tame kangaroo.

ESL teacher Ms. Jill Rozelaar is surrounded by fourteen Somali students and one Lebanese student at the end of an enjoyable and educational excursion.
