THE JOURNEY

by James Huynh

In September of the year 1959, the twins Chris and Drew, Nathan and I, stepped onto the land of the African jungles. At the time, Nathan was going to turn thirty one, the twins were turning twenty nine on the twentieth of that month and I was the oldest of the four, I was thirty two years of age. It was a very long time ago, but I still remember the events quite clearly.

Chris, Drew, Nathan and I had an antique shop and it was doing very well with business. One cold stormy day, a peculiar man came into the shop. No one had every seen the man before, but we thought he was a tourist because there were many tourists around at that time of the year.

He was looking at some of the African masks in the corner and then he bought one of them for twenty three dollars. The mask he bought was black with bright decorations. As he stepped out of the shop, I saw that he was holding a roll of paper as well as the mask that he had just bought from the store.

Suddenly, there was a loud clap of thunder and when I turned back to look at the man, there was no one there. The four of us went outside to look for him, but we only saw the roll of paper that the old man was holding. Nathan picked up the roll of paper and we went inside out of the rain to look at the paper that was left behind by the man. Chris gently opened the roll of paper. It was very dusty and old and when we looked at it closely, we saw that it was some kind of letter and attached to the letter was a treasure map. The letter was about a man named Frank Olivour. Frank was shipwrecked and he hid his treasure in a cave in the jungles of Africa.

It was then that the four of us decided to leave for Africa to look for the treasure, once we made enough money. Luckily, the shop was booming with business and in a few months time, Chris, Drew, Nathan and I were able to begin our journey to Africa. When we got off our flight, we were all exhausted and we stayed at a hotel until we were able to leave.

The following day, we went to the jungle in a Congo. We hired some people to help us and show us the way around. At the time, the voyage seemed to be very exciting, because we seemed to be having fun, but we didn't know what was to come!

Finally, after three long days of travel, we got to the caves where the treasure was hidden. When we walked through the cave, there were many masks like the ones we sold in the antique store. We walked through the cave the way the map told us and we finally got to the entrance of the room where the treasure was located, but it was blocked by large rocks.

Everyone started picking at the rocks, but there was a 'yell' when a rock fell and killed one of the workers we had hired. After that incident, we decided to camp and wait til morning light to continue breaking through the rocks.

During the night, there were many strange noises, but everyone was too tired to be aware of the things I saw. I was awaken in the middle of the night feeling hungry. I walked into the cave where the food was stored and it was then that I heard a chanting. I walked closer and followed the sound and at the blocked entrance, I saw three spirits float around. I stood there for a while and when they noticed my presence, they disappeared. I came up to the spot where they had been and written on the ground I saw the words 'those who disrupt the treasure shall die'. Seeing this, I ran out to tell everyone and before the signs of the morning light, we had packed all our things and left the cave.

None of us ever went back to Africa again. When we returned to our antique shop and examined the masks closely, we saw that there was writing on the masks and it said 'you shall die'. All four of us believed this and until this very day, the treasure has not been discovered.
