LOST IN AFRICA

by Kassim Abucar

I have a lot of personal experiences that no-one knows about in my class, I would like to share one of them with you.

This incident happened to me when I was ten years old. My family and I went on holiday visiting different countries in Europe including Italy, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and we went to Saudi-Arabia.

We started our holiday in Italy. Italy is a nice country with good people. I really enjoyed it there because the weather was nice and cool. We stayed there for two weeks. Next we went to visit Norway which was a great country and I spent some time with my sister. My sister lived in Norway for more than 20 years and she is about 35 years old. We stayed there for one week and half, then we went to Switzerland. It was my dream to see it and it was absolutely perfect. I also went to different places in Switzerland which was great.

Our journey continued and we visited Germany which was fun for me and we stayed there for a few days. Lastly, we went to Saudi-Arabia and it was summer time there and very hot. The temperature went up to 40 to 45 degrees.

We went to Saudi-Arabia because my father went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, Muslims believe that God will forgive them for their sins if they make this pilgrimage. We stayed in Mecca for about a month. During that month there was a little incident that happened to me and my mother.

We went to do some shopping at our local supermarket which was 5 minutes walk from the hotel that we stayed in. The market place looked like the Victoria Market because it was an outdoor market, I was walking behind my mother. The market was full of people and suddenly I lost her and my eyes could not find her. I was very scared and I didn't know how to speak the Arabic language. I tried to look for her but I was shocked and in my mind I said "you're gonna die soon," because I was young and I went to sit on a bench in the market, then I started crying.

Later, a security man came up to me and said, "come with me, I will take you to your mother." I didn't understand what he said, because he was speaking Arabic, but I could hear the word 'mum', so I stood up and walked with him to the market manager's office.

When I stepped into the office, I saw my mother crying because she thought she would never see me again, but it never happened and I went and gave her a hug and she smiled.

Till now I will never forget that moment.
