One cold and windy night, two lost boys were wondering helplessly around the dark alleys. Lined on one side were rubbish bins, overflowing with rubbish. The overhead streetlight left many shadows, making the alley appear spooky. The howling in the wind added to the effect, leaving anyone to feel uneasy. That was exactly how Ned and Drew felt then. They kept looking behind them, thinking that someone was on their tails.
Then, at the end of the alley, they saw a path leading to an old house. It looked cold and forbidden. A blue light was shining in the house. "What can that be!" Ned wondered. It suddenly began to rain.
"We're about to find out," Drew said, running towards the house.
Soon, they reached the front door. As they opened the door, they heard a very eerie sound. It seemed to be coming from where the blue light was. After they dried themselves off, they began creeping around the house, exploring it, their footsteps echoing creepily. In one of the hallways hung a scary portrait of a frowning man with the house in the background. He appeared to be the owner of the house.
Eventually, they discovered that the blue light was coming from the library. In the library sat a sad, old man. In front of him was a walking stick, which the light was coming from. Amazingly, it was standing on the floor, not lying down, as if an invisible hand was holding it up. Then, from out of the blue light, came a ghost. At first, it was a bit hard to see it, but when they could, they began shivering from head to toe, just at the sight of it. When it opened its mouth to speak, they practically collapsed to the floor.
"Go home!" it said in a very distant and hollow voice.
But instead of doing so, they began to say, "There are no such things as ghosts. There are no such things as ghosts."
The ghost got so angry that it would've turned red if it wasn't half transparent.
Instead, it started throwing books at them.
"Ouch!" Drew said, when one of the books hit him hard. Ned always got very upset when anyone or anything hurt his younger brother. Ned picked up the books and hurled them with all his strength at the ghost. They just went right through him. The ghost laughed at him for his foolishness. Ned tried another tactic. He started throwing books at the walking stick instead. The ghost was too busy laughing to notice it, till it was too late. The walking stick fell instantly once the book touched it. Ned and Drew didn't stick around to see what happened next. They bolted down the corridors, out the front door and into the garden.
They didn't stop until they were standing quite a safe distance from the house. They turned around and looked. The blue light had disappeared and the same sad old man from the library was now smiling at them from a window. As they started their hopeless journey out to familiar grounds, they remembered their frightening but extraordinary experience. Hearts beating, they turned around to look at the house one last time, only to see a thick mist. As they began walking again, they started to wonder if what had happened really happened.
They turned to each other and said in unison, "Must have been."
They laughed.
