SOMALIA 1987-1990

by Mahad Mohammoud

Siad Barre was not liked by many people, when he took the power in Somalia by force in 1969.

Things became very bad, when he killed a few religious men in 1974 and he became more unpopular when he killed 17 angry officers, who tried to overthrow him.

In July 1989 his soldiers fired at a crowded Mosque in Mogadishu during Friday prayers and killed about 400 people with no reason. During the night of that Friday, 47 men were taken from their houses and killed for no reason, too.

Again in July 1990, his security force opened fire on a crowded soccer ground. Many people were killed and many others were injured. He was present in the stadium at that time speaking to the people.

The shooting started when one of his security guards noticed another security man under cover with a small gun and suspected that he might shoot the President.

When Siad Barre left Mogadishu, another general named Midied, killed more people and caused more disasters.
