Since World War II, Australia has become the home of almost five million people from 130 countries. About 14 per cent of Australians older than five years speak a language other than English at home. Socially, Australia has been transformed into one of the most vibrant and dynamic societies in the world.

The range of restaurants, fashion, art and architecture are features that highlight Australia's cultural diversity and provide an additional dimension for the country's tourism industry.

The Federal Government has developed a National Agenda for a Multicultural Australia which highlights:

• the right of every Australian to express and share their individual cultural heritage, practice their religion and use their language;
• the right of all to receive equal treatment and opportunities; and
• the need to maintain, develop and effectively use the skills and talents of all Australians, regardless of ethnic origin, and to make the best of use of multicultural resources.
