SCHOOL EVENTS

Due to the low budget and increasing cost of inter-school competitionS, we were able to run only the School Swimming Day this year. The day was enjoyed by all participants and staff and as a result, a group of thirty-four students was selected to represent BSC at the Section Swimming. Four students from Years 10 & 11 won their events and progressed to the Northern Zone finals.

Athletics selections were run during Sport Ed. for Junior School and during class and lunchtime, for Middle and Senior School students. A squad of sixty-five students was selected to represent BSC at District level, with the best students representing our District at the Zone level. Consequently eleven students from BSC qualified.

SPORT EDUCATION

This year is the second year since we introduced Sport Ed. to our program. Sport Ed. gives students an opportunity to experience playing and competing in inter-school and intra-school sports competition. It develops school spirit and unity, builds character and increases students' interest in school and their academic subjects. The main objective is to attend to students' differences, regardless of their interest, ability and potential, to give all students an equal chance of participating in inter-school sports.

The program involves:

Week 1 - 6 ~ Skills/Strategies/Team Play/Coaching clinics

Week 7 - 9 ~ Practise games with neighbouring schools

Week 10 ~ Inter-school Round-Robin competitions leading to the District final (and possibly Zone and State finals)

This year has been very successful with a number of teams progressing to Zone Finals:

  • Year 7 Basketball
  • Year 8 Cricket
  • Year 8 Softball

All our students participated very keenly this year with almost 100% participation at both levels.

    INTER-SCHOOL SPORT

This year as in every other year, we managed to fill teams in most sports. Apart from already mentioning Junior students' successes and athletics, our Intermediate and Senior students also took an active part in inter-school sports, with great results achieved in:

  • Intermediate Softball - District winners
  • Intermediate Boys Netball - District winners
  • Intermediate Girls Netball - District runners up
  • Intermediate Boys Basketball - District runners up
  • Senior Boys Basketball - District runners up

In most of the cases we have to compete against schools which are three or four times bigger than BSC, therefore winning the District competition is a big success for us.

    CLINICS

A number of clinics were organised this year for our junior students:

  • cricket (combined with TDSC)
  • soccer
  • basketball

All clinics are run by Development Officers from Aussie Sports or coaches from appropriate local clubs. Unfortunately they are quite expensive, so I have to limit them to just a few and only to Junior students.

    SPORT LEADERS

At present there are a number of Senior students taking the big task of coaching Junior teams in a variety of sports. They all undertook a ten week sport leaders program at the end of last year designed by Aussie Sports. All students learned valuable teaching/coaching skills, strategies and organisational frameworks.

Since completing their training, all leaders plan, organise and conduct some of the practice sessions for Junior students and assist them to inter-school sports and athletics.

They were also involved with a number of sports days with Primary schools, some of them being:

    District competitions in:

  • basketball
  • netball
  • bat tennis
  • soccer
  • football

Heidelberg West Cluster Schools' "SPORTS DAY" where our students were taking a great role in umpiring/scoring:

  • softball
  • rounders
  • basketball
  • football
  • cricket
  • bat tennis

and Cross-age tutoring at Bellfield PS in Netball.

All Sport leaders gained invaluable experience through active participation in the program. Both personal development and self-confidence were fostered and opportunities given to learn leadership skills.

There is a big interest from this Years 9 & 10 students to run a similar program next year.

    LUNCHTIME COMPETITIONS

Despite a decreasing number of staff in the Physical Education department , we managed to run the following lunchtime competitions: Years 7, 8 and Senior Basketball, Years 7 & 8 mixed netball, Year 9 mixed hockey, Years 9, 10 & 11 soccer competition and Year 9 & 10 table tennis.

They are always very popular with our students who are taking the roles of organising, running and refereeing the games. Considering that only a small number of our students are involved in after-school sports (due to high costs), this gives them extra practice time for the inter-school sport competition which is combined with a lot of enjoyment.

    UNIFORMS

Our old sport uniforms after so many year of wearing and tearing, were upgraded recently due to the extra funding. I am also hoping that we can purchase some new tops for sport leaders for next year.

    OUTDOOR EDUCATION

    Canoeing

The activity was conducted at Yarra Bend Park and Fitsimmons Lane. It proved to be a challenge for all concerned, especially the Grade 1 rapids.

    Skiing

Mt. Buller was the venue for two full day trips this year. Apart from the early departure time it was well worthwhile with students reporting back favourably on a question of their most enjoyable experience.

    Low Ropes Course

As a motivational and group bonding exercise this venture proved highly successful.

    ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

During Semester 2 this year, I have met with the PE staff from the bigger school in our district (TDSC, Melbourne Girls, Uni High) to compare our units of work and assessment/reporting techniques. During our last PD, the Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 PE, and Year 10 outdoor education report formats, in accordance with CSF were established.

    PASE SECONDARY COURSE

The Physical and Sport Education (PASE) secondary course is part of a professional development program for physical education and non-physical education secondary teachers to assist with the implementation of secondary school sport programs. A number of staff from BSC (some of them involved with the Years 7 & 8 Sport Ed.) were involved with PASE this year. They all undertook an introduction to coaching courses in a variety of sports.

    PD ACTIVITIES

Our annual event is a two day Health/Physical Education conference organised and run by ACHPER which is going to take place on the 27th and 28th November, which both Brendan and I are going to attend.

    WISH LIST

They are related to staffing and budget. To continue to improve our high standard of participation and involvement in inter-school sport and delivery of a comprehensive curriculum, we require two full-time, qualified PE/Outdoor Ed. teachers. I can also notice the negative effects of cutting PE classes from two periods per week to one period per week at Years 7 and 8 level. It is no longer possible for us to run, for example, a comprehensive swimming program at this level.
