The College was was officially opened in 1955 and recently benefitted from a six million dollar government grant to improve and enlarge its facilities.

The College is committed to making new computer technology available to all its students to enhance their academic performance, and to promoting a stable environment conducive to learning. An Excellent Choice

Choosing the right school for you is a decision which you should not make lightly and doubtless you will consider the possibilities carefully. However I believe that Banksia Secondary College would be an excellent choice for secondary schooling in Australia. We offer our students a curriculum which ensures that they will develop the necessary knowledge and skills for their chosen careers. Our stable but unique multicultural environment and the friendly relations between staff and students help International Students feel welcome.

The College possesses unique facilities, the result of a recent refurbishment at a cost of almost 6 million dollars and our Computer Technology facilities are second to none.

I believe our sound teaching programs, particularly in the areas of English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Sciences and Information Technology, and the effective counselling which International Students receive from all our dedicated and experienced teachers, encourages self - reliance and the development of independent study skills. It is no accident that in recent years these students have achieved very high VCE marks which, I am proud to say, have gained them entry to various of Victoria's internationally recognised universities.

I invite you to read this prospectus as an introduction to Banksia Secondary College and if you would like to visit us or if you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the College at any time.

Arthur Coates, Principal

School in Australia

School education is very important to Australians who believe that all students should have quality educational opportunities from Primary School to University, no matter what their position is in society. It is because of this belief that Australia has one of the best developed education systems in the world which attracts many international students each year, especially from Asia. Secondary schooling in Australia offers preparation for entry into internationally recognised Australian universities with high academic standards and the opportunity to undertake this preparation in a school in an English- speaking country.

Inexpensive

  • One reason that so many international students choose to study in Australia is because it is relatively close to Asia and secondly, compared with England or Europe, it is much less expensive.

    Safe and pleasant lifestyle

  • Life in Australia's environmentally clean cities is informal, pleasant and relatively safe. Australians are friendly and welcoming.

    Multicultural Melbourne

  • 40% of international students coming to Australia choose to study in Melbourne which as well as being the capital of the state of Victoria, is one of the world's most multicultural cities. Melbourne has twice been voted internationally as "the world's most liveable city". There are parts of the city which are mainly Chinese, Vietnamese, Greek or Italian. There are also substantial Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Sri Lankan and Lebanese communities which together with many others, provide a varied and stimulating environment in which to study.

International students usually feel at home in Melbourne quite quickly because they can find familiar food in shops, supermarkets and restaurants. The various ethnic communities are a source of newspapers and radio and television programs in various languages and international students can usually access these easily.

On arrival - what happens to me?

As a Banksia Secondary College International Student arriving in Australia for the first time you will be met at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport by a representative of the College and taken to your accommodation.

    Orientation Program

In the next few days you will participate in an orientation program which will familiarise you with the Heidelberg area, including shopping centres and transport, and the College campus. You will go on excursions with fellow students to the city centre and to Healesville Native Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is on the outskirts of Melbourne and it will give you the opportunity to view rare and unique Australian fauna, such as kangaroos, koalas, emus, and the extraordinary duck-billed platypus, in a natural bushland setting.

On campus you will be introduced to other fellow students and your Year Level Co-ordinator who will help you finalise your subject selections. You will also meet the College's International Student Co-ordinator who can advise you over accommodation, and help you open a bank account and register for Health Insurance. The College Internationational Student Coordinator will monitor your general welfare, and provide you with counselling and on-going support.

    Nhi's Story

Nhi came to Australia when she was in Year 10. She completed her secondary education at Banksia where she gained excellent VCE marks and is now studying Medical Science, specialising in Haematology at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Nhi spoke very little English on her arrival in Melbourne but after a one term intensive English Language Program she was able to enter the Special English Language Program and mainstream classes at Banksia to successfully undertake studies for the VCE.

Nhi says, "I was very nervous at first and school in Australia was different from what I had been used to, but the Banksia teachers and students always helped me when I asked. VCE teachers often gave up their lunch-times to help me".

    Accommodation

When overseas students come to Melbourne usually they either make private arrangements for accommodation or they opt for Homestay, that is, boarding-style accommodation offered by private individuals. Most secondary students opt for Homestay. A set weekly fee is charged to cover all expenses associated with food and shelter, including three meals a day, provision of facilities, heating and cleaning services. Unless otherwise requested, students have their own bedroom with study facilities together with the use of other living areas within the residence.

International students enrolled at Banksia Secondary College and their parents are assured that the College will assist students to find suitable Homestay accommodation which is reasonably close to the College and ensure that they are living in a stable environment. All Homestays are carefully monitored by the College on an ongoing basis.

    Homework

Homework is an essential part of Banksia programs at all levels. There is an expectation that students will undertake homework or homestudy of approximately the following duration in each week of the school year.

    Year 7 5 hours
    Year 8 6 hours
    Year 9 10 hours
    Year 10 15 hours
    Year 11 20 hours
    Year 12 25 hours

VCE students should note that the suggested hours for Years 11 and 12 are the minimum required to achieve tertiary entry.

    Student Welfare and Discipline Policy

Banksia Secondary College's Welfare and Discipline Policy is based on the responsibilities and rights of the three groups of people involved in the educational process - the students, the teachers and the parents.

The College accepts the responsibility for the education and safety of a large number of people each day. The approach to student management is based on the importance of the rights of all students to receive a quality education in a safe and co-operative environment.

After an extensive consultation process involving all members of the school community, an agreed College Welfare and Discipline Policy was adopted which recognises fairness and the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved. Consequently the College has adopted the assertive discipline model of the American educator, Lee Canter.

    Uniform

At Banksia all students wear uniform. The uniform is simple and easy to look after. It consists of:

    Boys -

    Girls -

  • the college windcheater

  • the college dress (not compulsory)

Students may choose to wear a long sleeved white, blue or maroon skivvy underneath the windcheater in the winter instead of the college polo shirt.

International students will be assisted to shop for their uniform upon their arrival.

Melbourne's Climate and What to Wear

Melbourne's weather is changeable but temperate so you will need a variety of clothing. Summer can be quite hot so light cotton clothes are the most appropriate. You should also wear a hat and sunscreen if you are venturing out in the sun.

In the winter you will need warmer clothes such as jumpers, warm socks and a rain coat.

December, January, February January and February are hot

    Autumn: 18 - 24 deg C

    Andry is ready for V.C.E.

Andry came to Australia last year from Indonesia. He was able to understand some English but was unfamiliar with teaching and learning styles here. He was placed in the Special English Language Program which has helped him, not only to improve his use of English in school subject based areas, but also to adjust to the demands of an Australian curriculum.

Andry says, "I think I'm ready for the VCE now. Being at Banksia has helped a lot. After that I want to study Architecture".

English as a Second Language Programs at Banksia Secondary College

Banksia Secondary College has well-established English as a Second Language Programs for students from overseas, many of whom have gone on to successfully complete Australian University degrees. Students for whom English is not their first language are placed in groups of not more than 15 students where they are taught English by specialist teachers. These students undertake a course which has been specially developed to help them improve their English language skills at the same time as they undertake their normal studies. They take all other subjects in mainstream classes.

    Pre-VCE Intensive English Language Program

Banksia Secondary College is the English Language Centre for the northern suburbs of Melbourne. With expert staff and superb facilities, students are guaranteed the best opportunities to learn English in a friendly, supportive environment.

Banksia Secondary College also offers other academic help to students from overseas

    Tutoring Program

Banksia offers an after- school tutoring program to students from overseas who may be experiencing difficulties with work set during mainstream classes due to problems with English . The program is offered twice weekly from 3.30pm - 5.30pm and students are placed in groups of no more than three students who work on common problems with an experienced tutor.

    Aides who speak other languages

In addition to the teaching staff at Banksia qualified Teaching Aides are also employed who speak languages other than English. Currently there is:

  • an aide who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese
  • an aide who speaks Vietnamese
  • an aide who speaks Somali

The main role of these aides is to give academic support to students in the classroom, tutoring as required and help the College maintain effective contact with parents.

Other members of the teaching staff speak Japanese, Indonesian, Greek, Italian, Polish and Arabic and are able to help students and parents in their own language if this is requested.

Translated reports are posted to parents twice a year.

Use of Computer Technology at Banksia Secondary College

Banksia is a pioneer in the use and application of teaching and learning using multimedia and interactive technology. We have developed a presence on the Internet through our Home page and we integrate use of the Internet and Multi Media (CDROM) for research and data gathering across all learning areas and subjects.

We have various classrooms in the College which are equipped with student computers and our 20 Computer Multi Media and Internet Room is one of very few in Victoria. The fact that Computer Technology has such a high profile at Banksia encourages students to use innovative cross media researching and desktop publishing for the presentation of assessment tasks. These are invaluable skills which will stand them in good stead beyond school.

In core subjects our students develop Information Technology skills in Word Processing, Computer Graphics programs, and Data Base, Spreadsheet and Statistics methodology across the Curriculum. Students also learn Internet skills such as email, Internet searching, home page (HTML) design, Webchat and Video Conferencing. The school also uses advanced Digital Photography and image manipulation techniques for its own media classes, publications and publicity as well as for Internet attachment files in day-to-day communication on the Internet.

  • Computer Rooms are available to VCE students after school and all International Students have access to FREE EMAIL.

    What is the VCE?

The VCE is the Victorian Certificate of Education. It is the two - year course which Victorian students take at Years 11 and 12. The entry of students to most tertiary institutions is determined by the results they achieve for the assessment tasks undertaken as part of this course.

At Banksia Secondary College most students take 22 semester units over the two years. Normally they take 12 units in Year 11 and 10 units in Year 12.

As all universities and other tertiary institutions offer a wide variety of courses with differing VCE pre - requisite studies the VCE Coordinator at Banksia will advise you upon your arrival on which studies you need to select.

N.B. On Saturdays Banksia Secondary College is a campus for the Victorian School of Languages' program for the teaching of the following languages:

  • Mandarin
  • Korean
  • Arabic

Other languages are available at neighbouring schools.

As well as affording overseas students who are native speakers of these languages the opportunity to maintain their proficiency, they may also enrol in language classes offered by the Victorian School of Languages as VCE subjects, thus boosting their marks for consideration for entry to tertiary institutions.

Banksia's special relationship with La Trobe University

Banksia Secondary College is located very close to Melbourne's prestigious La Trobe University. Over the years a special and positive relationship has developed between the two institutions. This means that many of our students have secured places at La Trobe and La Trobe teaching staff visit Banksia to work with our VCE students.

    Success for Year 12 Students

Last year's Year 12 students performed extremely well in their final year at school. This effort is reflected in the outstanding placements they received at Universities and Colleges throughout the state in the first round tertiary offers. All the students who worked consistently throughout the year have been rewarded with their first or second preferences at tertiary level. The College congratulates them on their successes and feels sure that next year's Year 12 students will work with similar commitment to achieve results they can be proud of. Below is a list of a recent Year 12 class and their tertiary destinations.
