MYER FULL SERVICE SCHOOL PROJECT

SCOPING STUDY - DRAFT PAPER 4th May, 2000

The purpose of this paper is to outline the following:

As argued by Yoland Wadsworth (1997, p.33), ‘a research design guides initial actions but good research retains the capacity to respond flexibly as the inquiry unfolds’. With this is mind I believe it is not in our interests at this stage to develop neither elaborate nor ambitious plans to complete the study. The design of the scoping study must allow for exploration and inclusion around a number of themes relevant to full service school schooling and opportunities for collaborative learning.

OBJECTIVES:

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF DATA COLLECTION

The tasks and strategies outlined below are consistent with the original task nominated in our workplan.

Literature Review

This task has commenced with the help of the Vice Principal at Banksia Secondary College. Initially we are searching the Web sites for relevant information around a number of themes including: full-service schooling, at risk, resiliency, community school partnerships, equity and access, integrated services systems and community development.

This initial search will be completed mid May.

Various literature reviews have already been conducted through Berry Street and ACEE and will be used to support our data collection.

Information about other relevant literature will be collected through individual interviews and educational forums and campaigns held.

Educational Forums

The National Conference and Public and Educational Forums held would provide opportunities for gathering information about particular schools sites and other programs that could be used in the study.

The publication of newsletters requesting information from schools and welfare agencies will also be another technique for collecting data.

The Reference Group members will be interviewed to determine programs and schools to contact.

Tasks for the Research Circle

It is anticipated that members of the Research Circle can assist by interviewing schools or programs identified in their particular geographical areas or areas of expertise.

Members to shape recommendations for report and discuss strategies for communicating our findings.
