"Mark, I dunno about this, I have a feeling something's gonna go wrong."
"Look honey, nothin's gonna go wrong, we're the ones with the gun."
The young couple sat in their car nervously waiting for the owner of the house to leave. The house was two storeys with a high wall that blocked the view from outsiders.
"How are we supposed to get over the wall again?"
"Sally," Mark whined, "we've been over this heaps of times, it's simple, we go around the back and climb up a tree, and once we're....."
"Mark! Mark! look he's coming out of the house!" Sally whispered loudly. The owner wore an expensive three piece suit and walked in a brisk manner. He had thinning grey hair and wore thick glasses. In one hand he had a leather briefcase and in the other he had the keys to his Jaguar.
"O.K. let's drive around the back," Mark ordered. Sally started the engine as the Jaguar pulled out of the driveway. Once the couple reached the back of the house, they collected their equipment and got out of their car.
"Look, you go up the tree first and I'll follow you." Mark said. Sally used the low branches as rungs as she ascended the tree. Once she was at the closest point between the tree and the top of the wall, she took one giant leap and landed on the other side.
"Are you alright Sally?" Mark asked excitedly.
"Yes, I'm alright, hurry up and get over here."
Once they were both on the inside, they were amazed at the wealth of the owner. In the back there was a swimming pool, tennis court and Jacuzzi.
"Wow, look how rich this guy is Mark, and we can have what we want!"
"Don't get so happy yet, we still have to get into the house, but that shouldn't be much of a problem." As Mark said that, he brought out his glass cutter and suction caps from a bag, "Let's get to work."
Five minutes later, they were standing inside the house with a portion of the glass sliding door on the ground. "Now we're in business, look at this, this guys loaded!" Mark beamed as he looked around the house, "Let's get as much as we can and quick!"
They got out a large cloth bag and headed upstairs to the bedrooms. They had already made a plan of getting all the money and jewellery first and if there was room, they would get the bigger things.
Ten minutes later, they had filled the bag with cash and small valuables.
"That's all the jewellery and dough I can find, let's start taking the big stuff," said Sally. The young couple had worked their way from one end of the hall to the other, ransacking all of the bedrooms.
"This must be the parents' room, look how big the room and bed are," Sally said. They were both looking around when something caught Mark's eyes. It was a painting hanging over the head of the bed. It wasn't the actual painting that caught his eyes. In most rich homes, there were safes behind paintings. Maybe this was his lucky day.
"Sally, look at that painting, do you think there might be a safe behind it? There usually is in the movies." "Only one way to find out," Sally said. With that, she lifted the painting from the wall. "Mark! Look! " Sally whispered in awe.
"I'm not blind Sally! You don't have to tell me to look!" Mark said excitedly.
The centre of the young couple's attention was a small safe, built into the wall, But their joy turned to disappointment as they didn't know how to open it. "Now what are we supposed to do? You don't know how to open safes, do you?" asked Sally sarcastically.
"I don't, but I'll think of something. I can't let an opportunity like this slip through our fingers, maybe we could take the whole safe with us," Mark paused thoughtfully as he tried to think of an idea. " Let's check if the safes stuck in......"
"What was that?" Sally asked suddenly.
"What was what? What the hell are you talking about honey?" Mark asked impatiently.
"There was a noise, it sounded like a door." Sally insisted.
"It's probably just your imagin......"
"There it is again!" Sally whispered urgently.
"O.K. I heard it that time. I think it's the owner. I think he's back!" explained Mark.
"What the hell are we supposed to do? Where are we gonna hide? What if he catches us?"
"Shut up Sally, stop babbling and listen carefully," Mark paused as if making a decision. "If the old geezer comes in here, I'm going to blow him away, simple as that. When we first made the decision of bringing a gun, we agreed to use it if we had to."
"But I don't think I can do it," Sally whined.
"You don't have to, I'm going to do it. For now, let's be quiet and hope he doesn't come in," Mark whispered.
The silence was broken only by the sound of the owners footsteps. As the footsteps headed up the stairs, Sally made a weird moaning noise. When the steps came towards the room, Mark trained the gun on the door, ready for anything. Sweat was running down Mark's face as the door opened. The owner stood there, staring into the barrel of the gun. no one moved as time went by. It seemed like an eternity ,those few seconds.
The owner was about to say something when Mark pulled the trigger, catching the owner in the throat. Sally screamed as the blood squirted out of him like a busted balloon.
Even as the man was in the grip of death, the young couple grabbed the cloth bag and ran out of the house.
