I am not supposed to be where I am. I am what some people call a spirit. Others wouldn't believe in me. No-one can see me, hear me, or even touch me. But some feel a presence somehow, but I'm not sure why, I've only been dead for a short time.
I've been here and there and everywhere I've been it's always "it was an accident" or "she didn't mean it" or sometimes even "did she jump?" and "why?". But it was no accident. It had been planned for ages. I only realised that as I was blacking out, I only wished I had have figured it out before I went.
It all began, well, that's where I think it all began, when we were talking about our boyfriends in the hall at school. There was hardly anyone around because it was after school, so it was really quiet.
Melissa, Tanya and I had been close for ages. But since I began going out with Jamie, they seemed to be leaving me out more than usual. Jamie was the guy every girl dreamed about. Tall, blonde, drop dead gorgeous and I had him. So, I had a heap of girls that dropped by my house for no reason.
As we were talking, the subject of Make Out Hill came up. Every couple known to this earth went there to make out. Tanya and Melissa knew for a fact that I hadn't been up there ever. So what, I was still a virgin. No big deal. Well not to anybody else, only Tanya and Melissa.
"I bet you're too scared to go up to Make Out Hill on Black Friday", teased Tanya. She turned to Melissa and winked one blue eye at her.
Melissa smiled and said, "You know I've been there Tanya," then followed sarcastically, "but Belinda hasn't Tanya. Everybody knows that too."
"What would you know, like it's any of your business anyway," I jumped back.
Melissa turned to me with her fiery dark eyes with a huge grin on her face as though she'd just had the best idea. "Well, if you're not chicken, come with me and Tanya and the guys to the Hill Friday night. Oh and bring Jamie," Melissa explained.
"But this Friday is Black Friday. Isn't it totally off limits?" I asked curiously. Inside I was deeply worried.
"You're not scared of a few hungry wolves are you? That's not going to stop you from screaming," Melissa said. Tanya gave her a look and Melissa continued, "screaming for joy. That's why the Hill is called 'Make Out Hill'."
I was really worried how something was going on, but I didn't say anything, I just agreed to meet them there.
Friday finally came and Jamie was driving me to Make Out Hill. The hill was like a car parking lot at the drive ins, but there was no screen. Instead there was a cliff and a beautiful view of the city. It looked the best at night.
"Something's wrong. What is it?" Jamie asked concerned. I was grateful that he worried but I'm not sure there was any point.
"I don't know," I replied. "I think Melissa has something planned for me. But I don't know what it is." I looked out the window and watched the trees fly past.
We got up to Make Out Hill about ten minutes later. The only thing Melissa had planned were games. Well, at least I thought that was all. Something was funny about the way Melissa and Tanya acted. Melissa seemed anxious and Tanya a little worried and nervous. It was weird.
We started with 'hide and seek'. As usual I had to count. As I watched everybody go, I realised Matt and Jason, Tanya and Melissa's boyfriends weren't there. That 's what was funny, but I just let it go.
"Belinda, turn to face the city and count to 10, then turn and find us," Melissa sniggered. Once again her eyes were fiery and rather dangerous.
"O.K." I replied and began counting "1....2....3....4...." I thought, 'what was the point in playing hide and seek with three people'. I was about to turn around and say so when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
As I turned around, I saw Melissa's eye go bright red and the darkness seem to become darker. I felt as though Melissa and I were the only ones there.
Melissa stared at me, then suddenly moved. Her hands pushed hard on my chest and caught me by surprise. I stepped back into nothing. I hung there for what seemed like minutes and then plummeted to the jagged rocks below.
I think I screamed, I can't remember. As I looked up to find out if I could stop, Melissa looked down and laughed and laughed. As Melissa looked over the edge down on my falling body, she cried, "Goodbye Belinda, die painfully you deserve it."
I landed with a squish and the sharp rocks ripped into my warm, but soon to be cold body. I blacked out.
To this day, I still don't know why Melissa pushed me. But, I would love for her to feel what it's like to be torn apart by rocks.
